100 Wishes Quilt - posting the details again

Tuesday, February 06, 2007 | |

I've received a couple of calls lately from people asking about our 100 Wishes quilt. I thought I would post the original post again in case people missed it the first time or can't find it on the site. One thing I realized... if people are running a screen resolution under 1024x768, they may not be able to view the sidebar on the right side which has some recurring information such as the 100 Wishes Quilt information on it.

We have received at least 1 full sized scrapbooking sheet where the person has gone to great lengths to ship it to us. If you are doing a scrapbook page, it is too wide for a normal envelope. My recommendation would be to cut 2 pieces of cardboard slightly larger than the page and put the page and fabric between them. Tape along the edge of the 2 pieces of cardboard, address it and send it off. That's probably the cheapest way to ship it. Even better, stop by and visit. That wont cost a cent.

FYI, we're at 11 pieces now. We need 100. That means we need your help to make this quilt a reality.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a fun way that YOU can be a part of our adoption journey.

To welcome and celebrate a new life, there is a tradition in northern China to make a Bai Jia Bei, or 100 Good Wishes Quilt. It is a custom to invite friends and family to contribute a patch of cloth and a written wish for the baby. These patches of cloth are sewn together to make a beautiful baby quilt. The written wish is a note for the child telling them who you are so that they know who contributed to the quilt.

Here's where we need your help. We need you to send us 2 pieces of fabric. The first piece of fabric will be for the quilt and the second piece of fabric will go with your wish into a Memory Book for our child. The quilt (and scrapbook) contains the blessings, energy, and good wishes from all the families and friends who contributed a piece of fabric. As the years pass, this will be passed from generation to generation to become a family heirloom. The notebook will tell everybody who sent which piece of fabric and their message as well.

The making of a "100 Good Wishes Quilt" has become tradition in the China-adoptive community. It gives all of you out there an opportunity to be a part of our special adventure. We weren't going to do this but with the extra time we've been given because of the slowdown, we figured we'd start this project now and work at it over the winter.

Do you want to participate? If so, we need you to send us a couple things.

1... Two pieces of the same fabric. One must measure at least 10 x 10 inches. The other can be any size. Please select a fabric that is meaningful to you as this quilt will be designed by you. One piece will be used to create our baby's quilt and one will be added to the 100 Good Wish Scrapbook. if you are designing a page for our scrapbook, you can incorporate the second piece into your page. 100% cotton fabric is best, as it washes and wears well.
2... A wish for our baby! The wish is to be written (or typed, or drawn, or painted) on a separate page to accompany the two squares of fabric. Your wish can be as simple or as elaborate as you want it to be. The wish might be a prayer, favorite poem, a heart felt thought, a quote, or a drawing or painting. The paper and some of the second piece of fabric will be put into a standard sized scrapbook. If you're a scrapbooker, feel free to go crazy. The size of the page can be as small as a business card or as large as a scrapbooking page (10x10 inches). Please remember to put your name on the wish somewhere and include your city where you live. If you want, include a picture of you and your family for us to include in the scrapbook.

As the scraps come in, we'll be including them on the blog for everyone to see. If you don't want to be identified or you want to keep your scrap private, just let us know and we'll keep it to ourselves.

Still not sure what we mean?
