If you’ve been reading my blog, you’ll know about the beef that us International Adoption families had with the New Brunswick Adoption Foundation and their television and radio campaign which said something to the effect that you didn’t need to leave the province to adopt a child. During this whole adoption process, when people ask us why we’re adopting from China, the majority of the people who have asked that question have done so because of those commercials they’ve seen on TV. For me, I am comfortable with a situation like this because I feel that part of my role in this International Adoption journey is to be an advocate for it and to educate people on our decision. I’m sure not everyone is as comfortable being an advocate as I am and have ran into a similar situation which they were not sure of what to say. These ads were misleading to the general public and we wanted the ads changed.
Last week, I received a letter from the Minister of Family Services saying that this would be changed. This morning, I was CC’d in on an email from Louis Léger, the Interim Chair of the New Brunswick Adoption Foundation also confirming that this would be changed. This is a complete 180 degree turn from a few weeks ago when I received an email from him saying that he appreciated my email but things would remain as they were as they felt that the message was the best message that could be expressed.
So it just goes to show that our numbers may not be huge, but a letter writing campaign definitely does work. To all those people who wrote letter and made calls and talked to people, thanks. Let’s hope that the next message from the New Brunswick Adoption Foundation is less misleading.
