GATINEAU, Que. (CP) - A 500,000-year-old stone tool will be the oldest human artifact ever shown at the Canadian Museum of Civilization when it goes on display in May as part of the exhibition "Treasures From China."
More than 100 prized artifacts from the National Museum of China in Beijing are part of the exhibition, which explores Chinese history from ancient times to the modern era.
Other highlights include a decorated wine vessel from the Shang dynasty (1600-1046 BC) and a spectacular pottery horse and groom from the Tang dynasty (AD 618-907), according to a news release.
Also in the show are jade carvings and lacquerware; paintings and calligraphy; silk textiles; ceramics; and items made of bronze, gold and silver."
'Treasures From China' will offer visitors a privileged insight into the splendour and longevity of Chinese civilization," said Ban Seng Hoe, curator of Asian studies at the Museum of Civilization."
It will also help visitors better understand, interpret and appreciate Chinese art and fine crafts."
The exhibition runs from May 11 to Oct. 28 and will not tour. It was developed as part of an exchange agreement between the two museums. In return, the Museum of Civilization is creating an exhibition of Canadian First Nations treasures to be presented in 2008 at the National Museum of China in Beijing.
