Children of the East - Part 3

Thursday, March 08, 2007 | |

HEY! It's actually 4 nights, not 3. Tomorrow night, they will be profiling a 21 year old who's been living in Canada for 10 years. She spent the first 11 years in an orphanage in China. This should be a great story to hear. I cannot imagine what life would be like for her before and after she was adopted.

Until then, here's part 3 of the Global News special called Children of the East. Tonight, they take part in the Chinese New years celebrations in Halifax and visit the kids at a local daycare and Chinese school. With 1.3 billion people in China, most of them speaking Mandarin, these children are off to a great start. In the years to come, Chinese languages will be the languages to learn. French is still the primary second language taught in these parts (or English if you're in french school). In the US, primarily in the southwest, they're taught Spanish, but with China opening up every day to more and more western businesses and western money, Cantonese and Mandarin will be the upcoming languages of the 21st century.
