I belong to a Yahoo Group called Ask Jane In China. From what I can figure, Jane is a caucasian woman who adopted a girl from China then moved to China. You can ask her questions about China and she usually knows the answer, or finds it for you.
Someone asked her what the weather is like in October. We figure we'll be travelling sometime around then and this gives us a slightly better idea of what the weather will be like. We're probably safe in assuming that we'll fly in and out of Beijing, but we wont know what province we'll be travelling to until probably August/September.
Take a look at the map of China - find the Yangtze River. North of the Yangzte has distinct seasons just like their counterparts on the same latitute in the US. South of the Yangtze is a warmer climate with temperature fluctuations like the southern part of the US. If you have a globe you can do some comparisons - Some crude comparisons Beijing is Philadelphia and Peoria IL Guangzhou is Jacksonville Florida/Daytona Beach/Los Angeles Fall is the best time to travel in China - you can't beat the weather - it's at it's best everywhere in October. BUT don't hope for the last two weeks in October when the weather is great because that's the Canton Trade Fair and hotels in Guangzhou are $350 per night!
